University of Richmond

The Department of Physics offers students the opportunity to pursue some of nature’s deepest secrets. Physics is the study of matter and energy and their interactions. Using the language of mathematics, physics majors learn about the structures and interactions that constitute the universe, from its smallest components to its largest galaxies. Degree programs include:

In addition, students in other disciplines can choose to minor in physics or combine majors with our interdisciplinary physics degree.

The physics curriculum is designed to be hands-on since many concepts are best explained through practice and experiment. Students pair challenging courses with rich undergraduate research experiences to develop a plan of study that will prepare them for post-graduate study or technical careers.

Experiential learning opportunities don’t end in the research lab, however. Many students seek outside internships and study abroad experiences to complete their science educations. In addition, the department fosters a sense of community among students with organizations like the Society of Physics Students.
