In addition to the outstanding teaching and opportunities for undergraduate research, one of the major strengths of the physics department is the sense of community and dedication to each other that our students have.
The Richmond chapter of the Society of Physics Students was honored in 2013, 2014, and 2015 with an Outstanding Chapter Award from the national Society of Physics Students organization. The award recognizes the extensive research, social, and outreach activities of the chapter.
Richmond physics students host the Physics Olympics each year. With a goal of stimulating more interest in physics among high school students and providing support to physics teachers in the region, Richmond students sponsor a daylong competition for high school physics students from across the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. Students complete a series of team experiments as well as a general knowledge quiz to determine the overall competition winners.
