Scholarships & Awards

The following scholarships and awards are given annually to majors in the department of physics.

Science Scholar
Up to 10 Richmond Scholars demonstrating passion and excellence in scientific discovery in the sciences, mathematics and computer science will be designated as Science Scholars. Up to four of these will receive tuition, room and board. The remainder will receive full tuition. All Science Scholars must exhibit a strong potential for the successful pursuit of a career in a science, math or computer science field.

Robert Edward Loving Award in Physics
Established in 1954 by the University of Richmond Chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma, this award is given each year to a senior in Richmond College or Westhampton College on the basis of general academic achievement and promise for advanced study in physics.

Jackson J. Taylor Best Senior Seminar in Physics Award
Established by the Taylor and Hesch children in 1989 to honor Jackson Johnson Taylor, Professor of Physics from 1948–1986, this award recognizes the student judged by the faculty of the Department of Physics to have presented the best senior seminar.

Sigma Pi Sigma Honor Society
Founded nationally in 1925 and established at the University of Richmond in 1932, the official honor society of the physics profession has been a continuous presence on the Richmond campus for over 75 years. There are now over 400 chapters across the United States, boasting more than 58,000 members. Physics students are usually inducted into the society during their third year and membership conveys the right to wear the Sigma Pi Sigma stole at graduation.
